Trifari PhilippeMidCentury GoldParure TasselEarrings & CrystalDiamanteLinkCollar

About the Item

For Trifari by mid-century, its artistic director French-born Alfred Philippe designed this yellow-gold set including the seven-bar linked collar with central invisibly-set diamante, along with the tasseled drop earrings that are signed with the crown symbol above the brand name on their French-style clips. The Art-Deco style and fine craftsmanship of these pieces reflect some of Philippe's pre-1930s goldsmithing and diamond-setting techniques for Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, which he is credited with introducing to costume jewelry. Enabling lots of movement, the dangling parts of the 2-inch-long earrings hang below a shiny convex semi-circle, which drops to a smooth smaller ball that tops the 3/4-inch-diameter fluted-cap tassel with its more textural bunch of irregular-length chains. The central curved bar of the complimentary unsigned lustrous golden collar is invisibly set with a silver-foiled channel of clear crystals cut into faceted squares. The stirrup-like ends of the 2-inch bars with textured backs are linked by curled clips, whose shape is echoed by the fold-over clasp at the back of the neck. Only the dimensions of the necklace are specified in the Measurement-Units section of this listing. The lack of a U.S.-copyright symbol dates the set prior to 1955. In 1948, Trifari began using its patented shiny non-tarnishing metal alloy called Trifarium as a casting base for gold plating, while our gold-gilt earrings with points of verdigris visible on the interior of the clips predate this. As the crown stamp over the Trifari text was first used in the brand signature in 1937 in homage to Philippe's crown-shaped brooches that had become best sellers, they do not date earlier. Please see our other listings for additional crown Trifari necklaces, earrings and sets designed by Philippe between 1937-1955.

MiramHaskell c1930 Stamped Brass FloralMotif Pendants Link Chain Choker Necklace
By Miriam Haskell
Located in Chicago, IL
Featuring stamped-brass findings c1930, this Miriam Haskell collar necklace was made by her first designer Frank Hess in an Art-Nouveau style with ornate floral motifs for its 15 dangling bud-shaped or fluted-ball pendants, along with intricate textural patterns on the stamped bands that link the oval-ring chain choker. Among the festoon of graduating charms, the largest centered pendant is 1.5 inches long and 0.75 inches in diameter. One of our photos show that the surprisingly light-weight pendants are hollow--some with a hole punched at the bottom. The distinct stamped bands, which include a fold-over clasp, are found in more obviously Haskell-Hess pre-WWII jewelry...

Artist1990s Sterling GardenOfTimePendants ForFreshFlowers Jewelers'Werk Necklace
Located in Chicago, IL
Created by a gallery-exhibited progressive artist in the 1990s in a way that foreshadowed TheMet museum exhibition "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion", this ingenious signed sterling-silver chain link collar necklace features eight convertible pink-gem-accented pendants that can fasten your own pierceable larger elements, such as fresh flower heads or cut felt. It was initially acquired in the late 1990s from the U.S. avant-garde modern jewelry exhibition space Jewelers' Werk based in Washington D.C., which is printed on the included original black box with gold text. The versatile necklace that fastens with a handcrafted filigree floral clasp enables the wearer to choose from a wide variety of objects that can be pierced by the removable prong-set sparkly fuschia studs--from felt balls to folded origami paper--to attach to the likewise removable oxidized sterling cups. The perhaps morganite or crystal studs, whose silver ends are not visible after affixing such objects, can be mixed or interchanged with your own earring stud(s) or dangling pieces to enable more movement when worn. As shown in photos, a buyer can avoid the contact of such interchangeable objects with long hair by removing studded cups towards the back of the neck, whereby symmetrical sterling-stud fasteners that serve to link the chain necklace will discreetly remain. If the collector would like to use all of the sterling cups that surround the neck, one of their studs is missing its crystal, which can be replaced if entirely pink stones are preferred. We photographed the necklace populated with fresh and dehydrating daisy heads, which slowly wilt or dry while worn. With inspiration from TheMet current museum exhibition featuring beautiful contemporary clothes designed to show the passage of time, along with some of its archived fragile fashion based on the fiction-inspired theme "The Garden Of Time...

The pearl-like grayish-white moonstones are among beaded stations of cut-glass crystal that are spaced with tiny gilt balls. The matching earrings each feature a 6mm moonstone like the additional four on the necklace. The luminous moonstone beads look like quahog-clam pearls...

Georgian Berlin Iron and Mirrored Cut Steel Necklace and Earring Set
Located in Narberth, PA
Berlin iron jewelry was produced in Germany by the Berlin Royal Foundry beginning in 1804. Previously, iron jewelry had been worn primarily during periods of mourning due to the dark color of its black lacquer finish. However, it reached a high point of popularity between 1813 and 1830. To fund the War of Liberation against Napolean, citizens were asked to donate their precious gold in exchange for iron jewelry. The Berlin iron jewelry was sometimes inscribed with a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia, or with the words "Gold gab ich für Eisen" (meaning "I gave gold for iron") or "Für das Wohl des Vaterlands" ("For the welfare of our country/fatherland"). Almost overnight, Berlin iron jewelry became a symbol of patriotism. Its beautiful fabrication and lacy appearance gave it widespread appeal, eventually reaching popularity in numerous European countries. Authentic Berlin iron jewelry is now very rare, and well-preserved pieces have become very collectible! Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of polished faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible. An exceptional Berlin iron and cut steel necklace and earring set from the Georgian (ca1804) era! Crafted in fine Berlin ironwork with delicate cut steel studs and mirrored steel plaques throughout, this well-preserved ensemble is an incredible work of art. The ornate necklace adorns various sized iron-backed links topped with mirrored steel plaques, each one connected together by intricate, lacy Berlin ironwork. The largest link rests at the center, and features an oval-shaped mirrored steel plaque on the front that is adorns a raised iron cameo...
