About the Item
This 1920–30s Czech gilt brass and carved glass bib necklace is a beautiful example of vintage European costume jewelry, particularly from the Art Deco era. It was made in Czechoslovakia, which was a hub for high-quality glass and costume jewelry production during the early 20th century. The necklace measures 16.5 inches long. The front 9.5 inches of the necklace is comprised of 7 thin small strands bound together five places and the ends. Suspended from this is a second strand and five bunches of gilt and glass beads. The glass beads are carved with a floral design in the style of carved emeralds from India. They are mixed with textured gold oblong beads. The necklace has a drop of 2.5 inches.
Czech artisans were renowned for their glass cutting and carving techniques. Pieces often include intaglio glass (carved into the back) or molded faux gemstones designed to mimic jade, amethyst, topaz, or garnet. Intricate detailing, sometimes mimicking cameos, florals, or geometric Deco motifs. The necklace is in very very fine condition.
