About the Item

A simply astounding Baroque style necklace by the legendary Stanley Hagler who was known as the Picasso of Jewellery Design This piece was designed by Hagler himself before his death in 1996. It was made for Caroline Somerset, the 11th Duchess of Beaufort (my Godmother) for a ball to match her pink evening gown. The Duchess was one of the great beauties of her day (see last image for one of her wedding photographs)and was immortalised by her friend Ian Fleming in the James Bond novel 'From Russia With Love' when he bestowed her name on the Bond girl, Tatiana as a pseudonym. The time and workmanship that has gone into this necklace is incredible. The three rows of large carved beads are made of blown glass, as is the intricately engraved head. All the beads have been hand wired and the stones and crystals prong-set into place as opposed to glued on. Hagler used only the finest materials; the back of the necklace is Russian gold plate on filigree and all the crystals are the finest Swarovski. Hagler's work was fabled for its opulence and this piece would have done Marie Antoinette proud (as it is, it was made for a duchess). The necklace, when open, measure 19 Inches long. The engraved 'head' is 3 Inches wide and the pale pink rose drop is 1.5 Inches side to side. Like many of Hagler's couture pieces, the necklace is multi-functional and can also can be worn as a very dramatic bracelet when wrapped around the wrist. Since Hagler's death, the company he founded has employed two designers in an attempt to keep his legacy alive. But no-one has been able to emulate his genius and original Hagler pieces like these are highly prized and rare. This is a superb example of his work in a much sought-after colour. It's condition is mint, without a stone or crystal missing.
