About the Item
Eleven exceptionally rare carved gemstones are featured in this museum-quality Victorian necklace and the majority of the intaglio gems date to ancient Rome. Also known as gem carving, the art of intaglio dates to as early as the 14th century B.C.E. and was practiced by ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Assyria, Phoenicia, and later in Greece and Rome. The gemstone intaglio was among the most popular jewelry designs in ancient Rome, as Roman men of social standing commonly wore intaglio rings in order to mark wax seals.
This necklace includes ancient intaglios carved from a variety of gemstones, including carnelian, bloodstone, and lapis lazuli. Classic in execution and style, these intaglios feature everything from portraits and mythological scenes to animals and classical vases. Six intaglios, featuring birds and hunting scenes, date to Roman antiquity, while the remaining five were carved in the 18th century. Each design was painstakingly etched into the surface of the gemstone, giving zero room for error.
This collection of unique intaglios was likely formed from a single collector’s Grand Tour souvenirs, as these impressive gems were highly desired collectibles for wealthy European youths partaking in this journey. Their portable size and ties to the ancient world would have made these intaglios a rare, coveted souvenir in the 19th century, and even more so today. Set in 14K gold.

Favrile Glass Scarab Necklace by Louis Comfort Tiffany
By Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in New Orleans, LA
Created by legendary designer and premier tastemaker of the Gilded Age, Louis Comfort Tiffany, this necklace is a rare and unique masterpiece of jewelry design. Delicately crafted, the necklace boasts an Egyptian Revival design inspired by the archaeological excavations of Egypt beginning in the late 18th century. Scarab beetles finely executed in Tiffany’s signature favrile glass are bezel set in an 18K gold chain with rope-like links. The beetles flash iridescent hues of deep blue, green and purple, adding the perfect amount of shimmer to the enchanting design.
Best remembered for his stained glass windows and lamps, along with his Favrile glass creations, Louis Comfort Tiffany did not begin crafting jewelry until 1902. Inspired by the fluidity and translucence of ancient Roman and Middle Eastern glass...

Renaissance Cameo Pendant
Located in New Orleans, LA
The cameo at the center of this exceptional pendant is a stunning example of the art of gem engraving during the Renaissance. It likely dates to the early 17th century and features a sacrificial scene inspired by the Greco-Roman era. The central flaming altar is flanked by two figures preparing to sacrifice a ram, while a figure in a lion skin blowing horns stands in the left corner. The carver brilliantly uses the natural layers of the stone to achieve the illusion of shadow and musculature on the figures. A second, smaller cameo is set at the top of the pendant, while a myriad of multi-colored gems, pearls and enamel adorns the 18K gold setting. A large Baroque pearl suspended from an enamel dragon finishes the design, which embodies the opulence and theatricality of jewels from the Renaissance age.
Cameos and intaglios were highly popular amongst wealthy connoisseurs in Renaissance Italy, and owning the finest pieces was the privilege of princes. Although they were often elaborately mounted for display alone, cameos were also frequently worn as pendants, surrounded by enameled and stone-set gold frames. Such pieces were particularly prized by the Medici and Lorraine families, many of which can now be seen at the National Archeological Museum in Florence.
Very few Renaissance cameos...
