About the Item
Treasures of the Deccan: Jewels of the Nizams & Painted Visions is a two volume set devoted retrospectively to the fabulous jewels of the Nizams of Hyderabad, and a seminal collection of paintings that established the rich visual heritage of the Deccan inherited by the Nizams.
Jewels of the Nizams by Usha R. Balakrishnan & Deepthi Sasidharan (Volume 1)
Jewels of Nizams offers a glimpse into the splendorous court of the Nizams of Hyderabad. It explores the spectacular visual panorama of their lifestyle and culture and offers a rare glimpse into the interior spaces of their palaces, and the lives of the women in the zenana. Even as it lifts the veil that hid the royal treasury for centuries to reveal what was once accessible only to the closest members of the royal family, the book celebrates the pomp and grandeur of the court with magnificent photographs, laying bare the dichotomy between the private and public lives of the Deccan royals.
Featuring rare portraits from the archives of the Chowmahalla palace, and a carefully curated selection of the Nizams' jewels -- one of the most outstanding collections of gemstones and jewellery in the world, and never before seen items from private collections -- the book captures the history, romance, wealth and majestic lives of the Asaf Jahs of Hyderabad. 216 pages. 1910 grams. Hardback.
Painted Visions by Navina Najat Haidar (Volume 2)
Painted Visions presents a resplendent collection of paintings created at the royal Deccan courts between the late sixteenth and the mid-nineteenth century. The majority of the works in this volume come from the era of the Sultans (c. 16-17th century) whose rule brought about an extraordinary creativity in the book arts and painting. The Nizams who succeeded the Sultans in the eighteenth century continued the robust patronage of painting along with their love of the jewelled arts.
The Painted folios illustrated in this book are largely drawn from royal albums (muraqqas), providing a glimpse into the rarified world of the Deccan rulers through the rich imagination of their court artists. Deccani painters developed expressive and fantastical styles, innovating new idioms within the Indo-Persian canon while remaining true to traditional formats. Their works reveal likenesses of rulers, courtiers, revered dervishes and idealized women often presented in atmospheric landscape settings. A taste for elegant calligraphy and ornament rendered in the distinctive colour palette of the Deccan is also to be found in these pages. 100 pages. 1160 grams. Hardback.

Maharaja's Jewels Table Book by Katherine Prior, Assouline

Maharaja's Jewels Table Book by Katherine Prior, Assouline.
The stories of Indian princes and their jewelry and precious stones are brought together in this illustrated narrative tracing the rise and fall of India's leading royal houses through the dramatic fortunes of their crown jewels.
Traditionally, precious metals and jewels have been, for Indians rich and poor, a repository of wealth and a status symbol.
For the reigning families, jewels also had symbolic and religious significance.
Also here are the original drawings by great European jewelers of the pieces they designed for their exotic and demanding clients.
The text is both lively and scholarly, drawing from descriptions of such travelers as Marco Polo and Tavernier as well as Sanskrit dramatists extolling the riches of India.
