Old Pawn Bolo Wise Owl with onyx, deep red coral and hand forged sterling.

About the Item

This Bolo owl pendant was handcrafted by Navajo Verdi Jake, marked VJ. The large oval onyx body has huge silver feathers, genuine red coral for the nose, and sterling flowers for the eyes. The body has a v- notched bezel surrounded by heavy twisted wire and silver balls. It is carefully formed into one integral pendant, artfully blending the silver parts. It includes bolo hardware on the reverse side. Add your favorite Bolo string tie, or turn into a beautiful pendant. This striking owl is a very unique, eye catching work of art. Notice the quality, the careful and thoughtful construction and the master design. The native owl, “Neeshiaa” is a symbol representing wisdom, magic and prophecy. The sound of the owl is a call to summon the spirit world. Spiritual tradition holds that the owl represents vision and insight. I found several references that state the owl gives the ability to see things that are normally hidden from view, such as the motives of others and it aids in thwarting deception. Wearing this imparts meaning and aids in confidence. It is exceedingly rare to find this type of old pawn bolo design. I love that it was made by a female silversmith. It is subtle, classic and uniquely made. As a silversmith myself, I believe fine silver (.999) was used on the back to meld the pieces together, a conscious decision that allowed for the flexibility needed to solder the pieces together for a more integral fit. Liver of sulfur was used to oxidize the joined pieces so that the eye sees the owl clearly, with added depth. VJ is stamped three times on the back. Clearly, she was very proud and rightfully so. I hope you consider the rarity and symbolism in this design as well as its' uniqueness. It is simply stunning. You will enjoy having it in your collection,
