About the Item

European ca. late XVIII - early XIX cent. period Heart and double-sided Cross. Openwork/lace type ornamental panels cast in ca. 10- 12K Yellow Gold and mounted on top of inner Gilt Silver crossed parts. Both sides are decorated with tiny cut Steel settings with multiple facets. These cut Steel settings closely imitate Diamonds and shine brightly in daylight and at the same time work as rivets here to hold the whole construction in one piece. Popular from 1700s through to Victorian times and a little beyond, cut steel is best described as a ‘mushroom’ of steel, the top of which is faceted and polished to a very high shine. Each ornately cut and individually polished stone then has individual facets. The more facets each ‘stone’ has, and the more tightly packed together they are, the better quality the item. Both Heart and Cross measure 67 mm long, Cross alone is 48mm long x 36 mm x 5 mm deep. The cross is not hallmarked. In finest used condition, with no deformations, no missing or damaged parts. Amazingly these Steel diamonds are in excellent condition and show no signs of rust after at least 200 years of existence. Cut Steel is Very sensitive to water and will rust if ever exposed to moisture. Take care if you choose it. Footnote: to preserve steel parts from possible rusting You may consider covering them with tiny amounts of transparent solvent-based Nail lacquer top coat that will create a water-resistant protective layer on steel and at the same will be easily chemically removable if need be. > Most of the items that we sell are not new at all if not stated otherwise. Gemstones may often look differently in different light and weather conditions and time of the day, both indoors and outdoors. Stones of the rings photographed alone may look a bit differently when on hand because your finger makes the back side of the stone closed and light no longer can go through and the color becomes different. Stones with closed backs may seem darker than stones with open backs. Such nuances of color perception do not give any excuse to claim item to be not as described. Some buyers tried to make return of the items and to avoid paying shipping and restock expenses claimed that : " color is different from that on image .. " there are inclusions that I didn't notice " "it looks smaller than I expected" ! Unfortunately Internet sales do not allow us to see the items in person before we get them by post. So If you want to be be absolutely sure about the colors or other qualities of the items that you want to buy - please buy at physical shops and avoid internet shops. Do not buy here. CUSTOM WORK : About Resizing: Resizing of rings can be done on request. The work will be done by experienced professional jeweler. Note: We will not be responsible for any physical/color changes that may occur as a result of heating of the stones during the process of resizing. We will not be responsible if in the process of resizing or customization any stone on the ring becomes loose, if any deformation occurs in general or if band of the ring changes shape or becomes deformed. Such misfortunes may occur very seldom, but cannot be ruled out when dealing with old jewelry for any sizing requires heating and change of the band's shape. Polishing of the band is always a final step of any resizing but machinery used for polishing causes vibration that old rings (with prongs for example ) often do not like at all. WEIGHT OF THE STONES The cuts of the stones that you may see on many of the older jewelry items are usually of older mine or European and because of their deeper culets, off-round shapes and higher tables their weight is difficult to determine using the formulas for diamonds with a contemporary cut, therefore their approximate weight can only be estimated. It is often difficult or impossible to get an accurate characteristics of the weight , color and nature of inclusions without removing the stones from the settings to be weighed and examined and doing that may damage the piece.
