22 Karat Gold Etruscan Revival Necklace From The Metropolitan Museum of Art
About the Item
A highly unusual and rare 22 karat yellow gold integrated pendant necklace prominently featuring a large dark blue cabochon stone in a bezel setting. The pendant is extremely detailed, featuring fine jewelry making techniques throughout; leaf motifs and arches are differentiated with varying finishes including smooth matte arches and others designed as ropes. Two serpents guard the pendant at either side with an additional two serpents mounted at the top of the pendant. The chain is a thick hand-woven mesh, and the clasp, which features delicately roped leaf shapes at either end, features a figure eight safety clasp. The necklace measures 17 inches in length and weighs 44.4 pennyweights. The necklace is an extremely rare example of fine jewelry produced for sale by the Metropolitan Museum, whose output of jewelry is much more typically considered costume.
