Rare and Exceptional Russian Diamond-Set Gold, Platinum and Emerald Pendant Necklace by "Alexey Denisov-Uralsky", with the workmaster's mark of the Sixth Jewelry Artel, St. Petersburg, 1914-1917
The present pendant, featuring a rare and exceptionally large Russian emerald from the Ural region, exemplifies Denisov-Uralsky's interest in Russia's native precious stones. The emerald is set in gold and platinum by the Sixth Jewelry Artel of St. Petersburg, and it can be dated to the period of 1914-1917, both by the assay mark and the stamp inside the original fitted case. The stamp indicates that the pendant was sold by Denisov-Uralsky at 27 Bolshaya Morskaya in "Petrograd," the name for St. Petersburg during World War I.
The rectangular step-cut Russian emerald within a gold mount, suspended from two chains and suspending five tassels, with various pear, marquise and triangular diamonds and smaller emeralds, with a later fine link neckchain, marked on gold mount, in the original wood case. Height of pendant 3 inches (7.6 cm), the emerald approximately 22.98 x 21.7 x 10.24 mm.
The St. Petersburg firm of Denisov-Uralsky was founded by Alexei Denisov-Uralsky (1863-1926), a painter and lapidary. His lapidary work was exhibited in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and he received awards at such international exhibitions as Copenhagen (1888) and Paris (1889). In his artistic work, Denisov-Uralsky tried to draw attention to the value of the natural resources of Russia's "Ural Mountains". He developed a project to provide incentives for the industrial extraction of the region's precious stones and for the development of deposits of gems. At the same time, however, he was an advocate for the careful treatment of the region's resources. Denisov-Uralsky's production consisted of functional and decorative objects, such as desk objects and statuettes of semiprecious stones and also decorative pictures made of semiprecious stones enhanced with watercolor. In addition, he created fine jewelry of gold, emeralds, rubies and pearls.
In St. Petersburg, Denisov-Uralsky operated a jewelry and lapidary workshop and a retail shop at 42 Moika Embankment. From 1911, the firm operated from number 27 on the prestigious Bolshaya Morskaya, just several doors away from the House of Fabergé, with whom the firm sought to compete.
