Ancient Egyptian Heart Pendant, Bicone Lapis Beads, 22k Gold Beads and Clasp

About the Item

Sixty-six lapis lazuli bicone shaped beads alternating with sixty-seven 22k gold tube beads with flared ends. There is a lapis lazuli heart pendant at the center-point of the necklace. The pendant is 1.6 cm in height, 1 cm in width, and 4.5 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.4 mm. The lapis lazuli bicone shaped beads graduate in size towards the back of the necklace. The largest is 5.9 mm in length, 4 mm in width, and has a drill hole diameter of 1.6 mm. The smallest is 4 mm in length, 3 mm in width and has a drill hole diameter of 0.9 mm. The gold tubes are slightly graduated to match the lapis lazuli beads. The largest gold beads are 6.5 mm in length and 2.3 mm in width. The smallest are 3 mm in length and 2 mm in width. The clasp and beading tips are also 22k gold. The flared gold tube beads allow the ends of the lapis lazuli beads to set into the ends of the gold beads like a ball and socket. This gives a very solid and substantial look to a very delicate strand of beads. The lapis lazuli pendant depicts a heart. The heart was thought to be the seat of the soul; the amulet is meant to protect the soul of the wearer. The ancient Egyptians believed that the life force or soul resided in the heart. Although we today believe that the consciousness resides in the brain, we still use phrases like “heartfelt emotion” that reveal the ancient belief that the feeling and perceiving self resides in the heart. We still associate the heart with love in spite of the fact that we know that its function is to pump the blood throughout the body. The symbolism of amulets is contained within the associative system of metaphors. The necklace is 20 3/8 inches (51.8 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 12.5 grams.
