Ancient Greek 6th Century BC Griffin Coin 18K Gold Pendant
About the Item
An authentic and rare archaic silver "drachm" coin from the Greek colony of Teos 475-465 BC, featuring a griffin is highlighted in an ancient-inspired Steven Battelle handmade double row textured organic setting The ancient city of Teos existed along the coast of what is now Western Turkey. The image of a griffin was used in most of its coinage. This particular early archaic coin only has an image on one side, as the coin makers of that period had not yet learned to strike images on both sides of the coin. The griffin is a legendary animal with the body of lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was the king of beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was thought be an especially powerful and majestic creature. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and also a guardian of the divine. The pendant comes with a laminated coin certificate of authenticity. The 18K handmade hammered chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. Very rare, ancient, and definitely one of a kind!

- Ancient Greek 5th Century BC Swan Coin 18K Gold PendantBy Steven BattelleLocated in Soquel, CAAn authentic ancient Greek coin from the region of Cilicia (now in Western Turkey) with a beautiful depiction of a swan is featured in this Steven Battelle pendant design with intricate hand applied doubled spirals accenting the bezel. This is a rare coin almost never seen in jewelry. This coin predates the time of Alexander the Great when each Greek city-state minted their own distinctive coinage. The swan on the above coin is the symbol of Astarte-Aphrodite. This bird must have been common on the Pyramus marshes near the ancient city of Mallos. The swan has always played a major role in Greek mythology, it serves as a symbol of beauty, love, and grace. Aphrodite is also often depicted riding a swan. The bird's beauty and whiteness symbolize Aphrodite's grace and allure making it sacred to the goddess of love and beauty. The opposite side of the coin is indistinct from a worn die, but is known to depict a winged figure holding a solar disc...Category
