Ancient Roman Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant Necklace Helena Holy Water 700 AD
About the Item
Indulge in a magnificent Museum Quality Ancient Roman Byzantine Bronze Cross dating to circa the eighth century AD. The extremely fine bronze cross depicts Helena holding holy water in her right hand, the reverse side is inscribed with a line of inscriptions. The ancient cross is mounted in silver. The Byzantine Bronze cross is ancient, the silver mount is modern. The cross with the fabulous relief image of Helena with Holy Water dates to circa 700 - 800 AD. Here is an opportunity to acquire a museum quality wearable cross that is approximately 1300 years old! The cross has the most beautiful well loved patina to the bronze commensurate with its over 1000 years of history. The image of Helena is sensitive and touching. The reverse is inscribed with lovely engraved writing.
The cross is one of the most beautiful ancient jewels we have seen and is the work of a master artisan. And crosses are the height of fashion today as evidenced by Kim Kardashian's recent purchase of Princess Diana's Amethyst Cross for $197,453.
BYZANTINE EMPIRE: The Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire centered in Constantinople during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The eastern half of the Empire continued to exist until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. During most of its existence, the empire remained the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in the Mediterranean world. The term "Byzantine Empire" was coined following the empire's demise: its citizens referred to the polity as the "Roman Empire" and to themselves as "Romans". The imperial seat moved from Rome to Byzantium and Christianity was adopted as the state religion.
The cross pendant is 2 1/2 inches (7 cm) tall including the bale, and is 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) wide.
The cross without the bale is 2 inches tall.
The pendant weighs 35 grams.
