About the Item

Thirty-four round gold beads with twelve round carnelian beads and a red jasper bird pendant. The stone pieces are said to be from the Tairona people of Colombia, South America. They have been made entirely without the use of metal tools by the use of abrasives, drills and string saws. The pendant is 2.4 cm from the top of the beak to the tip of the tail. It is 2.6 cm wide at the shoulders. It is 1.68 cm from back to front. It is drilled through at the back of the neck for suspension. The drill hole is 3 mm in diameter. The back is flat. The bird is probably a rendition of the harpy eagle. The wings are indicated by deep grooves that outline the shoulders and fronts of the wings and separate them from the chest volume. Two horizontal grooves at the bottom indicated the tail feathers and the feet. A deep groove forms the neck. Two bulging circles on either side of the head indicate the eyes. Two angled grooves that begin at the eyes slant downward and meet at the front of the beak to indicate the upper and lower parts of the beak. As with other chief figures, the head is tilted slightly back elevating the chin or in this case, the beak, conveying authority. The carnelian beads range from 6 mm to 9 mm in diameter and 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm in length. The larger beads have 3 mm drill holes that taper until they meet in the center of the bead; the smaller beads have drill holes of 2 mm in diameter. The ten larger round gold beads are 10.5 mm in diameter and 11.5 mm in length, being slightly oblate in shape. The twenty-two smaller gold beads are 7.5 mm in diameter. Two 5 mm gold beads fit into the groove at the neck. The beading tips are spheres with a strap of flattened wire attached to the bordered rim on a raised disc to either side of the openings. This hides the knots at the end of the cord on which the beads are strung. The beading tips continue the look of the spherical beads and are also incorporated into the design of the clasp. The necklace if 15 ½ inches (39.5 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 46 grams.
