In an effort to save the city, the citizens of Novgorod brought the icon of Our Lady of the Sign to the city wall and when one of the arrows struck the icon, tears formed on the image. Fine antique French Empire period double sided Sacred Heart silver cross 19th Century Length: 3.75 inches Width: 2.25 inches Tested for sterling silver, of solid construction. The front depicting the Sacred Heart pierced by a sword and topped with a flaming torch, flanked by the motto Spec Unica. The back with the Sacred Heart surrounded by the Crown of Thorns, bleeding, topped with a flaming torch, with the following letters: C.U., E.T., A.U., ICJ. The decorative elements at the arms are classical French Empire period, circa 1840.
