Antique Victorian Gold Box Chain Tassel Pendant Necklace
About the Item
An antique box chain necklace set with a tassel pendant. The box chain necklace is made of 18 karat and the lovely tassel adorned with rope decor is made of 14 karat gold. The box chain is also called "Venetian" chain, thanks to its origins in artisanal Venetian jewelry makers, who made fine necklaces for the Italian elite as early as the 6th century.
Early box chains were formed using a technique in which jewelers wound gold wire into small rings and welded several of them together, one on top of the other, to form a single link. These prototype links would then be put together to create necklaces and bracelets commonly worn by Dogaressas and other Venetian noblewomen. These pieces were considered so valuable that they were often divided among the daughters of prominent families and given as part of their dowries.
Although the signature flat surfaces are no longer clearly visible in the design, the double or triple box offers a classic aesthetic closer to traditional Venetian chain designs. Two or three adjacent links are stacked on top of each other. This gives the piece greater strength and a characteristic woven texture.
The chain necklace is in very good condition and of high quality. The necklace has a spring ring closure that works well. The length of the necklace is circa 71 centimeters and weighs 7.4 grams.
The pendant necklace will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
