Antique Victorian Rivière Necklace

About the Item

Victorian-era rivière necklace featuring a combination of amethyst, citrine, and rock crystal stones, each bezel-set in 9k gold. The necklace is composed of 17 oval-cut gemstones, connected by a double strand of gold chain work typical of mid-to-late 19th-century jewelry design. At the center is a detachable pendant with an arrangement of teardrop-shaped stones in varying sizes, designed to function as a focal element or to be removed for alternative wear. The necklace closes at the back with a clasp set with an oval faceted rock crystal. This collarette-style piece reflects period-specific design and materials commonly associated with Victorian jewelry, including the use of colorful gemstones and symmetrical, articulated construction. Rivières were often worn by women of the upper and middle classes as formal evening adornments, symbolizing status, refinement, and the fashion sensibilities of the era.
