Antique Victorian Whitby Jet Cross c. 1860

About the Item

Polished to a gloss, this Victorian Whitby Jet Cross is voluptuous in density and detail and smooth to touch.. It is hand carved and sculptural. Note the three curves at the cross ends that honor the holy trinity. The carver increased texture by placing a raised orb at center and diamond forms north, south, east and west. He or she showed love of the art in creating this jewel rather than making a simple flat cross. Jet is fossilized wood. The material is 180 million years old from the bark of the Araucaria tree but became popular when Queen Victorian wore jet jewelry when mourning for her beloved Prince Albert. It is difficult to find it in perfect condition without nics or nibbles. This cross is as perfect as the day it was made. I see it on a beautiful French Pleated Ribbon or a chain. It is strikingly beautiful. According to metaphysical beliefs, jet can help the wearer to break negative behavioral patterns. Jet has also been used as a stone of good luck and one that brings clarity during trials and worries. In Victorian jewelry there was a language of flowers where flowers had symbolic meaning. Same is true of materials used in jewelry. Victorians saw meaning hidden to us in their jewelry. This cross is perfect. Light in weight is a characteristic of jet. 2 1/2 inches high, 1 5/8 inches wide weight 4 grams
