Art Deco Jade Pendant Certified Untreated
About the Item
This astonishing Art Deco (circa 1930) jade pendant is the color of homemade caramel. In fact, it's the color of the caramel just after you have melted the sugar to a golden syrup and are stirring in the thick, sweet cream. Hand-carved around 1920 in China, this magnificent highly translucent jadeite jade pendant is exquisitely, so deftly and artfully carved that you can look at it from either side or any angle and see Art Deco itself. There is a creamy swirl on both sides that has been brilliantly incorporated into the geometric design carved into the stone.
I believe the carving depicts lingzhi (also known as reishi) mushroom, which is known as the immortal or divine mushroom and is associated with these qualities. The mushroom is frequently encountered in Chinese carvings; not so frequently encountered are stylish "cropped" images of the mushroom which at first glance appear like mere lines, as we see here. The lapidary work is not merely impeccable but you can feel the optimism of the future-forward Art Deco era in the lines themselves. Only after looking for quite a long time do you notice the dragon.
The pendant measures 41.01mm x 22.55mm x 5.60mm. The 14K yellow gold hoop bail is a more recent addition to this antique carving and it deserves a finer bail.
Jade of this orange-yellow color may not be as valuable as green "Imperial jade," but it is, in fact, a rarer color. And this is a fine, highly translucent example, indeed.
The pendant ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).
