Egyptian Glass Necklace

About the Item

This striking necklace dates from the 18th Dynasty and exemplifies the skill attained by Egyptian jewellery-makers in this period. Falling early in the era of the New Kingdom, these centuries saw the apogee of Egyptian power, and the famous reign’s queen Nefertiti and Tutankhamun. With power came the patronage of craftsmen, and the 18th dynasty is known as a rich period of cultural production; its output including gold objects, monumental statues and sophisticated jewellery pieces such as this. Composed mainly of glass, this simple beautiful necklace is dominated by three tear-drop pendants beaded together by small, spherical red glass beads, and larger ones of gold. The drop pendants have a smooth dark red surface, with a patinated sheen. The two smaller stones are backed by unpolished green glass, producing a striking, contrasting effect if viewed from the side. Glass was regarded as a luxurious and important material in Ancient Egypt, and was called 'iner en wedeh', or ‘stone of the kind that flows’ in reference to its production process.1 The advent of the 18th Dynasty saw rapid innovation and great creativity in the field of glass craftsmanship, as new ways of manipulating colour were developed. The colour red was considered symbolic in Egyptian artistic tradition; holding connotations of both life and death, of energy and of power. The pendants of this piece, perhaps symbolic in their sanguine, droplet shape, show the skilful manipulation of colour and glass for which this era is well-known. Together, material and pigment are used to dramatic and beautiful effect.

These necklace elements come from Asia minor, a large region covering areas of modern-day Turkey, Iran and east into India. Many important civilisations inhabited this area in antiquity including in the 4th Century B.C when Alexander the Great of Greece conquered the Persians and the regions to the east. Both lapis lazuli and turquoise were highly prized within the region, with some sources showing that their value was greater than gold. These stones were traded among neighbouring regions and civilizations, lapis lazuli mined in ancient Bactria was brought along trade routes to cities of the western...

Ancient Hellenistic Necklace with Banded Agate and Gold-Charm Beads
Located in London, GB
This stunning necklace dates from the Hellenistic Period. Beginning with the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C., the era is renowned for its artistic efflorescence. Gold flooded into the Eastern Mediterranean after Alexander’s conquest of Persia, and with an abundance of material to work with, the skill of Hellenistic jewellers reached new heights of refinement and inspiration. This piece likely dates from the Late Hellenistic period, during which jewellers made innovative use of gemstones within elaborate gold settings. This necklace composed of ancient elements, including 10 gold beads with hanging charms, 28 large natural polished garnet beads and a large central gold capped lozenge shaped banded agate. From the Hellenistic period, this necklace may have originated from Greece or as far East as the Bactriana (modern day Northern Afghanistan, including parts of southwestern Tajikistan and southeastern Uzbekistan). This necklace has been restrung and fitted with an 18ct gold S clasp.
