The bear is a sacred and powerful symbol in Navajo culture, symbolizing strength, wisdom and courage. This striking necklace by Ervin Tsosie is composed of sterling silver and turquoise inlaid sterling silver bead chain and a large 3 inch wide sterling silver and gemstone inlaid Bear pendant.
Marks: Sterling, ET for Ervin Tsosie, Sterling on bead cones
Pendant: 3 inches wide, 3 inches high including bale
Beads: barrel shaped turquoise inlaid beads 14mm by 11mm; bicone silver beads 10mm by 7mm; length of necklace is 19 inches.
Ervin Tsosie is a self-taught artist whose work is based on spiritual and ceremonial motifs in Navajo culture. His work incorporates intricately inlaid meticulously hand cut semi-precious stones, sometimes over one thousand individual pieces in one piece of jewelry which requires months to complete.
Tsosie's work is represented in several galleries in the Southwest including Gallup Trading Co. and has been exhibited in the Intertribal Ceremonial, Gallup and the Santa Fe Indian Market shows.
Provenance: from the estate of a noted New York City psychiatrist and collector of unique, one-of-a-kind jewels.
