French Art Nouveau Peridot Diamond Gold and Plique-a-Jour 'Juliet' Pendant

About the Item

A French Art Nouveau 18 karat gold pendant with diamonds, pearls and peridots. The pendant features a plique-à-jour background with rose-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of .60 carat, 3 freshwater pearls and 3 pear and round-cut peridots with enamel decoration surrounding the profile of Juliet. Shown in the Poster House (New York) exhibition "Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau./Nouvelle Femme," June 20-October 6, 2019. Note: This exquisite Art Nouveau image depicts Juliet at the moment when Romeo, lingering in the Montague's garden, catches sight of her on her balcony. She is illuminated by the dawn light, represented in the jewel by the sparkling diamonds framing her head and the panes of glowing plique-a-jour enamel behind her. Though he first sees Juliet dancing with another man, Romeo is not put off, predicting that their love will prove "a beauteous flower" and identifying her with light: "she teaches the torches to burn bright". Meanwhile, behind a veneer of obedience, Juliette, resolute, witty, and loyal, chooses independence in death over life with the man her father has commanded her to marry. In part thanks to his captivating and complex woman heroes like Juliet, Shakespeare "went global" in the 19th century, inspiring world artists not only in drama but painting, printmaking, fiction, music and jewelry. Circa 1900.

René Lalique Plique-à-jour Enamel and Natural Pearl Breton Lion and Seaweed Pend
By René Lalique
Located in New York, NY
Likely created circa 1903-1907, this plique-à-jour enamel and natural pearl pendant brooch with chain by René Lalique is set in 18K gold. The modified triangular form, composed of chased 18K gold, centers two stalks of seaweed among pale green plique-à-jour enamel seawater, symmetrically bordered by rampant lions joined at the top at the tips of their tufted tails, the reverse counter enameled, suspending a natural saltwater pear-shape pear with rose tones. A work of subtle homage to Brittany and its wild coastline, this flowing form harmoniously combines motifs evoking the marine flora and history of this noble-spirited region of France so beloved of late 19th century artists. Product Details: Item #: N-21379 Artist: René Lalique Country: France Circa: 1903-1907 Materials: 1 natural saltwater pearl (measuring approximately 9.85 x 8.62 mm); Plique-à-jour Enamel; 18K Gold Signed: LALIQUE Documentation: Accompanied by GIA report #6237144602 dated December 13, 2023, stating that the pearl is natural and of saltwater origin. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: French artists like Monet and Gaugin discovered the "emerald coast" of Brittany, Western France, in the 1880s. They captured the independent spirit of the inhabitants, dressed immaculately in their distinctive regional attire, engaged in traditional rural and seaside pursuits such as haymaking, tending animals, fishing, and journeying in groups on foot through the countryside to attend mass. Another activity that captured the artists' imagination was the more unusual activity of the seaweed harvest. Gaugin and others captured these Breton "Goemoniers'" quiet dignity as they performed this backbreaking work, raking, drying and burning the massive stacks, variously employing horsedrawn carts or the more strenuous hand barrows...

15k Gold Art Nouveau Plique-à-jour Diamond and Pearl Necklace
By Mappin Brothers
Located in Venice, CA
A classic Art Nouveau design, this 15k rose gold necklace features stunning plique-à-jour, Rose Cut diamonds, and beautiful pearls. The centerpiece of the necklace is articulated, hinged in two places so that the flower and pearl drops dangle freely. Three plique-à-jour leaves are translucent—the loveliest matte soft green that fades into subtle purple highlights, clearly done by a master. Each cell of the leaf is filled with plique, with a white metal (platinum or white gold) creating contrast in the center of the leaf. Inside are a channel of bead set Rose Cut diamonds. A flower is suspended from the leaves, with multi-tones of peach to pale yellow that glow against the gold, with a prong-set diamond as its piston. The design work loops over, turning the bail into a scrolling foliate. The 15k gold appears rosy, as it has an incredible patina that shimmers with various hues of pink, gold, and green. “Plique-à-jour” translates from French as “letting in daylight” and is a charming technique used in jewelry throughout the 20th century. To create this effect, colored, transparent enamel is suspended between gold backless cells to allow light to illuminate the piece with vibrant colors, similar to a stained glass window. The flower hangs from a 15k gold classic alternating link chain...
