About the Item

This glassy light green jade pendant has been carved free-form style and as a result, is a Rorschach test you can wear around your neck every day. Do you see a raw diamond or a chunk of glacier ice? An exotic juicy fruit from another world or a piece of wave-smoothened sea glass? I am fascinated by this carving and I'll tell you why. First, jade has been carved into pendants for thousands of years. But what's unusual here is that this carving does not depict something —no monkey, no peach, no flower blossoms, no pea pod— in the material world. Rather, the carving is a creation solely of the lapidary artist's imagination. It's a fairly sizeable (47.45 carats) chunk of highly-translucent very fine jadeite jade that would be semi-transparent if it weren't so thick (the carving measures 30.46mm x 24.34mm x 9.40mm). The body color is light green on the gem lab report. But light green doesn't even begin to describe the color because it changes with the light. The edges are often an icy blue, pale, pale, pale. And sometimes the green looks faintly blue, too. I am sure the colors will appear different depending upon where in the world you live and what season it is. Jade has the ability to absorb ordinary light and render it extraordinary. There is no sign of wear but jade is extraordinarily tough and can be difficult to date. The 14K yellow gold bail isn't a great deal of help either. But this sort of icy or watery jade has not always been popular. It's really been in the 2000s that glassy, watery, icy jade has become a thing. So my guess is that this pendant was created at some point in the not-too-distant past. There are no signs of any wear. The pendant has been carved with a chiseled texture that could suggest motion or waves or melting ice. It's easier to feel than it is to see this texture. The pendant ships with the simple 24" yellow gold chain you see pictured as well as a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).
