Imperial Russian Cloisonne Enamel Egg Pendant, Workmaster Ivan Khlebnikov
About the Item
This workmaster Ivan Khlebnikov gilt cloisonne enamel egg pendant is a unique piece that echoes the style craftsmanship of Medieval Russia. Crafted in the 19th century in the Russian Empire, Moscow, it is a scarce find for any antique jewelry enthusiast.
Ivan Petrovich Khlebnikov was born in 1819. His father, Pyotr Khlebnikov, had his jewelry production. Young Ivan worked in his father's organization from a young age and then ran his business. Ivan Petrovich was 52 years old when he opened the Moscow Jewelry Factory in 1871. Ivan Petrovich, who had been engaged in the trade of precious works for about 40 years, acquired outstanding technical knowledge in many areas of jewelry art. Khlebnikov's fame and success grew incredibly quickly. A year after the opening, the organization officially began to present jewelry to the court of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, brother of Emperor Alexander II. A year later, Khlebnikov's products were highly appreciated in Europe. By the time of his death in 1881, Ivan Khlebnikov had served as the official supplier of the Imperial Russian family, the Grand Dukes, and the sovereigns of Denmark, the Netherlands, Serbia, and Montenegro. Khlebnikov’s international acclaim stemmed from the numerous exhibitions he participated in, especially those in Vienna (1873) and Moscow (1872) - he won two gold medals at each of these. His company was known for producing decorative silver and enamel work which reinvented traditional Russian style and folk art through originality and a colorful palette. In particular, Khlebnikov was known for immaculate plique-à-jour and cloisonné enamel, and for works produced in the Russian and Modern styles.
In the last photo, we have given examples of all the hallmarks of the Khlebnikov factory, which was produced from 1874 to 1917. And these are not even all the known examples. The enterprise, unfortunately for collectors, used a large number of hallmark punches. The coat of arms of the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich can be displaced next to the manufacturer's name, and the double-headed eagle appeared in 1879. The hallmark on our egg pendant in Cyrillic "И.Х" (in the last photo number 1) was put from 1874 to 1879. After the death of Ivan Petrovich in 1882, the short hallmark with initials was not put, but only Cyrillic «ХЛЕБНИКОВЪ» или «ХЛЕБНИКОВЪ СЪ СЫНми и К°». The methodology for studying hallmarks developed at the Moscow State Research Institute of Restoration and the constantly expanding database allows for a comparative analysis of hallmarks of both the names and assay supervision. For example, the hallmarks (in the last photo. 1 and 5), despite all the apparent differences, were affixed by the same hallmark punch but with different striking forces.
The loop in the egg and the pendant ring are twice stamped with hallmarks (master's marks, silver hallmarks, and the mark of the city of Moscow).
Length: 27 mm
Width: 18 mm
The weight: 5 grams
The egg is decorated with four tiny garnets - rhodolite.
The egg pendant is in excellent vintage condition. A unusual beautiful piece of art.

Imperial Gilt Silver Guilloché Enamel Egg Pendant, Workmaster Hjalmar Armfeltd, St Petersburg, 1908-1917
We are pleased to present another unique item from our collection—an elegant miniature egg pendant adorned with guilloché enamel from the era of the Russian Empire. This exquisite piece was crafted in St. Petersburg by master Hjalmar Armfeltd at the beginning of the 20th century.
The pendant measures 21.5 mm in length (excluding the hanging ring) and 14.5 mm in width, with a weight of 5.3 grams. It remains in excellent vintage condition, without loss or damage to enamel.
Notable marks can be found on the pendant’s hanging ring: the Greek letter “α” (alpha), indicating its inspection by the St. Petersburg Assay Office, “88,” as well as the woman’s head in a kokoshnik and the Cyrillic initials “ЯА” — the master's mark Hjalmar Armfeltd, a distinctive detail that adds to its allure.

Most of the items that we sell are not new at all if not stated otherwise. Accordingly, most of the items most often show some signs of use. We do our best to photograph and describe condition as accurately as possible if we notice something. There is no point in hiding anything or lying about the condition of used items that are at least several decades old..
Also presume that sometimes metal parts, stones or enamels ,etc. may show minor scratches, chips, micro-dents, minor deformations and other signs of wear and aging that we could miss to notice in description, unintentionally. .
If there are questions about an item, please email me before you buy it. I will note in the description any anomalies but also provide visual aid concerning condition though photographs, and these should be considered part of the description.
Most images of items listed were taken under natural light at daytime. We use modern high quality digital cameras and additional photo equipment for image processing. We upload high quality images that allow to see well the shapes, colors and flaws of very small stones . So look carefully before you buy anything. In reality some colors of materials involved may look a bit differently depending on light conditions, settings and functionality of your monitor and my camera. Your personal perception of colors and physiological conditions of your eyes may also affect the vision of the items. Gemstones may often look differently in different light and weather conditions and time of the day, both indoors and outdoors. Stones of the rings photographed alone may look a bit differently when on hand because your finger makes the back side of the stone closed and light no longer can go through and the color becomes different. Stones with closed backs may seem darker than stones with open backs. Such nuances of color perception do not give any excuse to claim item to be not as described. Some buyers tried to make return...
