She utilized this unconventional and effective tool for diplomacy on America’s behalf. She explained that “the truth is that it would never have happened if not for Saddam Hussein.” The poet-in-residence of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein called Albright “an unparalleled serpent” when she was the Ambassador to the United Nations. Shortly thereafter, when preparing to meet with Iraqi officials, Albright decided to make a diplomatic statement by wearing a pin with a serpent wrapped around a stick. Although her method of communication was new, her message was as old as the American Revolution – Don’t Tread on Me! From that day on, pins became part of her diplomatic signature.
