About the Item

A huge, oval cut, deeply saturated teal color apatite is talon prong set in 18 karat white gold and surrounded by a fantastic halo of round brilliant diamonds set in an openwork, curlicued, floral pattern and accented by a large, tapered diamond bale featuring horizontally set baguette diamonds surrounded by round brilliant diamonds. Oval cut apatite measures 13.17 mm wide x 18.05 mm and weighs 11.11 carats. The color of this stone is amazing and it is clear and transparent, resembling the color of a Paraiba tourmaline. There are 133 diamonds, total, with 5 baguettes, 1 larger round brilliant, 63 medium round brilliants and 64 smaller round brilliants. Baguettes vary in size and weigh approximately 1.25 carats. Larger round brilliant diamond measures 2.8 mm in diameter and weighs approximately .08 carats. 63 medium round brilliant diamonds measure 1.9 mm in diameter and weigh approximately 1.75 carats. Smaller round brilliant diamonds measure 1.4 in diameter and weigh approximately .75 carats. Clarity of the diamonds is VS and color is F-G. Hallmarked, "18k 750". Face of pendant measures 23.72 mm wide x 27.47 long x 10 mm deep. Diamond bale measures 11 mm long x 6.85 mm wide (tapers to 5.08 mm). Length of pendant and bale is 38.94" mm. Bale opening measures 8 mm long x 2.5 mm wide. Suitable for a much larger chain or an omega necklace. This pendant would look fantastic on a diamond necklace! Includes pictured 14k white gold 1.3 mm diamond cut wheat patterned chain. Chain is 18" long. Pendant and chain weigh 12.5 grams. Apatite is a very common mineral, but transparent gemstone-quality apatite is extremely rare. Despite the fact that apatite is the defining mineral for 5 on Mohs scale of hardness, the gemstone remains virtually unknown to most, and is seldom found in jewelry stores. However, because apatite occurs in such a wide variety of attractive colors and forms, it is a favorite among gemstone collectors. The name 'apatite' was derived from a Greek word meaning 'cheat'. It was given its name because of its close resemblance to several other gemstones that are often more valuable. As a result, apatite became unfairly labeled as the 'deceitful stone'. Connoisseurs often seek out rare colors such as Paraiba-like blue-green apatite. Top grade blue-green specimens of apatite can rival that of famed Paraiba tourmaline. When cut and polished, apatite has a vitreous luster. Almost all apatite will have visible inclusions. Eye-clean specimens are very rare, especially in large sizes. Apatite gemstones are rather fragile compared to most gemstones. Care for apatite should be similar to that of precious opal. Apatite is sensitive to heat and shock, so the use of steamers and ultrasonic cleaners should always be avoided. Apatite is sensitive to acid, so it should not be worn when working with chemicals. Avoid wearing apatite jewelry when engaging in vigorous physical activity, such as exercise or sports, or when doing household chores. Since it is considerably softer than quartz, simply wiping off dust can eventually cause apatite to lose its polish and develop surface scratches. When storing apatite gemstones, wrap them in a soft cloth, or place them into a fabric-lined box. Always store apatite separately from other types of gemstone and gemstone jewelry.
