Important and scarce vintage Coco Chanel "camellia" pate de verre statement necklace. This iconic necklace is comprised of gilt metal dore and turquoise camellia flowers comprised out of "pate de verre" "poured glass" by Maison Gripoix which gradually cascades down and is adorned by large green leaves. Maison Gripoix is one of the oldest and most reputable workshops of bijoux de haute couture, one of their first and most reputable clients being Coco Chanel, who started working with Mdme. Gripoix in the 1920s continued until the late 1960s. Often uses camellias in her designs, as it was the first bouquet she received from Boy Capel, her lover. The necklace is in pristine condition and is large in scale which is unusual for most Chanel jewelry, it dates to the early 1980s - signed on the back. About Chanel (Designer) The first Chanel shop was opened in 1910 in Paris on rue Cambon by the young milliner Gabrielle Chanel (1883–1971), who had picked up the nickname “Coco” while working as a club singer. The boutique drew the attention of the Parisian fashion elite who popularized her wide-brimmed Chanel Modes hats. Soon she added a sportswear store in the Normandy resort town of Deauville, where Coco set the tone for her defining sense of style — traditionally masculine garments reimagined for feminine shapes, made from simple jersey fabric.
