About the Item

The diamond is doubtlessly one of the most iconic materials within the world of jewellery. This necklace, dating to the late 19th century, celebrates its beauty and combines it with another treasure of the natural world, one that was valued the same at the time of the necklace’s creation: a natural pearl. In a frame of yellow gold, an old mine cut diamond of 2,00 ct is presented. The diamond is held by prongs on a ground of black enamel, making the precious stone gleam ever more radiantly; it almost seems to hover freely atop the gold and enamel. There is some space between the diamond setting and the golden frame, adding to this play on light and shadow. Beneath the diamond, on a pendulous setting, we see the natural pearl. It’s as large as the diamond and of a beautiful off-white colour with slight hints of silver. The setting, also accentuated by black enamel, is reminiscent of a flower from which the pearl seems to drop. The pendant is permanently mounted on a delicate golden chain. Stylistically, it’s typical of the taste of the late 19th century. Its trilogy of black, white and gold appears warm and sensual, and was then an alternative to the fashion of coolly toned, purely white jewels made of diamonds set in silver. The piece would have been worn in the evenings, to a low-cut gown, at a dinner or soirée.
