Victorian 18k Banded Agate, Pearl + Enamel Mourning Locket
Located in Narberth, PA
This rare mourning locket from the Victorian (ca1875) era is quite a stunning piece! Crafted in vibrant 18k gold, the decorative locket serves as an incredible example of the mourning jewelry tradition. A delicate white pearl is pin-set in a gold 8-pointed star; a classic Victorian motif. The pearl and star rest in the center of a bezel-set piece of banded agate, surrounded by a gold twisted rope-like border around the bezel. The agate and pearl are encompassed by a broad gold boarder heavily adorned with black enamel. The enamel script reads "In memory of" on the four points of the cross. In between the points of the cross, gorgeously enameled flower-like shapes fill in the negative space. The outer edges of the locket also feature spoked gold-shot detail. The locket also boasts an over-sized bail that features the same floral enamel styling that can be seen throughout. The backside of this piece features a single large compartment with a removable glass face with gold frame that likely once held a photo or memento of the deceased. Engraved above the top of the compartment reads "George May, Died 6...

About vitreuos enamel: The inimitably luminous colours are literally created "in the fire": layer by layer, enamel is carefully fired in at 800 degrees Celsius. During guilloching, the finest wave patterns are engraved into the gold, creating a unique depth effect. Vitreous means made of glass: the ancient technique is almost forgotten today and Victor Mayer is perhaps the last manufactory to master it at the highest level. About guilloché: Guilloché refers to a class of enamel with abstract geometric patterns cut into the surface of precious metals and showing clearly through the overlying glaze. The manner in which the design is engraved into the metal increases the luminous quality and play of colors in the translucent glaze when the object is rotated to catch the light. About Rubellite: Rubellite is the red or pink variety of tourmaline and is a member of elbaite. Rubellite is also the rarest gem in its gem family. It is occasionally mistaken for ruby. These gems typically contain inclusions. Rubellite is the most expensive and prized gem in the tourmaline group. The most valuable rubellites are those that are colored red and have no brown. Ones that are of ruby color are the most valuable. (Source: Wikipedia) About akoya pearls: The akoya pearl is a saltwater cultured pearl from the akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii). Akoya are considered to be the classic pearl used for necklaces and other pearl jewelry, with perfect round shapes, bright mirror...
