Victorian Scottish Sterling Silver Banded Agate Locket

About the Item

An unusual combination Scottish locket leans toward the bold side. There was a silver revolution in England between 1860-1880 when Queen Victorian gifted silver and wore it herself after years and years of donning only black in mourning for her husband. This was responsible for silver jewelry to be purchased in the European nations. The large banded agate is haunting and the contrast between it with the simplicity of the silver is exquisite. It was believed banded agate promotes beauty, harmony and fertility. From the earth and cut and polished by stone cutters who situate the bands central for that balance and appeal. Two covered frames remain inside for memorabilia that feels good for you to keep close. Exctraordinary condition. Height 2 3/8 in Width 1 1/4 in.

  • Victorian 18k Banded Agate, Pearl + Enamel Mourning Locket
    Located in Narberth, PA
This rare mourning locket from the Victorian (ca1875) era is quite a stunning piece! Crafted in vibrant 18k gold, the decorative locket serves as an incredible example of the mourning jewelry tradition. A delicate white pearl is pin-set in a gold 8-pointed star; a classic Victorian motif. The pearl and star rest in the center of a bezel-set piece of banded agate, surrounded by a gold twisted rope-like border around the bezel. The agate and pearl are encompassed by a broad gold boarder heavily adorned with black enamel. The enamel script reads "In memory of" on the four points of the cross. In between the points of the cross, gorgeously enameled flower-like shapes fill in the negative space. The outer edges of the locket also feature spoked gold-shot detail. The locket also boasts an over-sized bail that features the same floral enamel styling that can be seen throughout. The backside of this piece features a single large compartment with a removable glass face with gold frame that likely once held a photo or memento of the deceased. Engraved above the top of the compartment reads "George May, Died 6...

  • Victorian Sterling Silver 'Amity Eternity Infinity' Locket
    Located in Brisbane, QLD
A wonderfully large sterling silver Victorian locket with an elaborate 'Amity, Eternity, Infinity' monogram to the centre front. The oval highly polished locket hangs from a tapering but large bale which allows either a large chain or bolt ring clasp to slide through with ease. To the front of the piece is an elaborate 'AEI' monogram which has been applied over the top of the locket, however is original to the piece. This monogram is often seen in Victorian jewellery and stands for 'Amity, Eternity & Infinity'. The firmly closing locket features two windows inside with glass to place a photograph or lock of hair behind. The piece dates to circa 1890 and due to the lack of hallmarks is unlikely to be English, but perhaps American in origin. A gorgeous example of Victorian era silver jewellery which is still so wearable today. Marked - unmarked but tests as sterling silver Measures - 6.75cm L x 4cm W Total weight of piece - 30.6 grams (NB this includes the internal components of locket) NB in the modelled and styled photographs the locket is pictured with a Victorian sterling silver book chain...
