Zuni Turquoise Squash Blossom Set

About the Item

Zuni Sleeping Beauty and sterling silver squash blossom and earrings set by Zuni silversmith Susie Lowsayatee, 1989. Inlaid Grade A quality stones with sterling silver accents on a double Navajo pearl beaded chain. Petit, light weight and feminine. Original owners initials in italics on back read "WJS Zuni." Nice patina from age. The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead literally means “bead that spreads out”. This tri-petal form first appeared about 1880. Scholars believe that this flower motif was introduced by the Spanish as a variation of the pomegranate flower blossom, and the Navajo adapted it as a symbol of their revered squash. Initially the necklaces were rather simple with the tri-petal silver beads interspersed with rather plain beads. In time, stones were added to the blossom beads as demonstrated in our collection. According to the Navajo, the Naja is strictly decorative; however, it has always been held in high regard by the Navajo and other peoples. Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. Sterling Silver Handmade Vintage Bisbee Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
Located in Scottsdale, AZ
An astonishing seventeen perfectly matched natural Bisbee turquoise cabochons were used to create this super rare squash blossom necklace. Today, due to the scarcity of the turquoise the necklace would not be able to be made. Each of the large specimens is the signature look of the lavender pit of the mine, deep Bisbee blue with reddish brown and purple matrix. The quality of the silver work is a great testament to the rarity and beauty of the stone. It is strung with beautiful handmade silver beads and is very wearable. Bisbee mine turquoise was one of the first to appear for sale on the modern American market, which is at least partly responsible for its fame. The turquoise mine was a secondary operation to the Bisbee copper mine, operated by the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The vast majority of Bisbee turquoise surfaced when the Phelps Dodge started their open pit...

The Zuni tribe is known for master craftsmen who are experts at cutting stones into intricate patterns that fit together into the silver, rather than the silver being shaped to fit around the stones. The Zuni cut their stones with precision and place them into the jewelry, basically setting the stones the same way a contemporary jeweler would. The Zuni artist concentrates on the stone, with the silver as almost a matrix to contain the stone. Zuni silver jewelry...
