About the Item

A fine English Art Deco sterling silver presentation dresser or vanity box. By Adie Brothers of Birmingham. In sterling silver. With a shark skin finish to the lid and a dedication to the interior that reads: "To Walter T. Prendergast / With my kind regards / Andrew W. Mellon / London, March 1933". Andrew Mellon served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1921-1932, and as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. from 1932-1933. We assume this was a farewell gift from Mellon at the end of his tenure as ambassador in March 1933. The interior is lined with wood and the bottom of the box is finished with leather. Marked to the side with English hallmarks for the Adie Brothers maker's mark / Birmingham / Lion passant for sterling / H for 1932. Also marked to the interior of the lid with hallmarks for Sterling / 1932. Simply a wonderful box connected to the famous Andrew Mellon! Date: 1932 Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There is a spot of oxidation on the side, some light dings and indentations to the back, a slight smile to the lid (meaning the lid does not close entirely flush) and some tarnish to the gilt interior. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Adie Brothers Marks: Marked to the side with English hallmarks for the Adie Brothers maker's mark / Birmingham / Lion passant for sterling / H for 1932. Also marked to the interior of the lid for with hallmarks for Sterling / 1932. Measurements: Width: ca. 4 5/8 in. Depth: ca. 3 5/8 in. Height: ca. 1 7/8 in. Items purchased from this dealer must delight you. Purchases may be returned for any reason for a period of 7 days.
