About the Item
Particularly popular from the mid 1600s to the mid 1800s, fashionable snuff boxes were considered a status elevating personal accessory. Snuff taking,
enjoyed by many to acquire a nicotine lift in lieu of smoking, commonly consisted of dried ground tobacco flavored with oils, extracts or fermentations and was often carried in highly decorated snuff containers. Crafted in sterling silver and hand engraved with flora and botanical designs, this exceptional snuff box displays hallmarks including; George III duty mark, SP Samuel Pemberton as its maker's mark, the Lion and a date indicator of 1812 Birmingham. Measuring 101mm long x 64mm wide and 23mm deep, this unique antique snuff box has an unusual anatomically contoured shape designed to achieve a neat tuck for storage in a gentlemen's waist coat pocket. In addition, the case is discretely engineered with two separate interior compartments preventing substance contamination. The box's interior retains its original gilded finish and the exterior presents a beautifully toned, completely original finish.
