About the Item

Swirling hand painted colors on leather showcase a winged angel on this beautiful Japanese Wallet from the Meiji Era in Japan, c. 1868- 1912. The embossed colors are red, gold, brown and black. The wallet is called an inro. A series of silver chains are topped with a Bakelite Netsuke with raised silver decoration of a water dragon which repeats the design of the silver closing on the wallet. The inside is red and the inner wallet flap is tan. This is an antique item that was used to hold tobacco and small objects. The netsuke would slip under the obi and the wallet would hang in front of the wearer. I wore it under a belt in Western style. It is an extraordinary accessory for a collector of Japanese Art an Jewelry or any man or woman who enjoys unique style. Approximate measurements 4 1/2 wide by 2 1/2 high. Netsuke 2 inches in diameter. Good antique condition.
