About the Item

A beautifully crafted Art Nouveau sterling silver cigarette case, richly decorated in high relief with lily-of-the-valley motif among sinuous whiplash curves. The design is characteristic of the Parisian silversmith Charles Murat, renowned for his Art Nouveau bijoux and silver accessories produced around 1900. This example bears Birmingham import marks for 1905: the decimal fineness mark 925, the triangular import symbol, the date letter f, and the sponsor’s mark T·B (registered for imported silver). These confirm that the piece was made abroad—most likely in France—then assayed on arrival in Britain. The combination of floral motifs and flowing lines aligns closely with Murat’s celebrated French designs, making this case a fine example of the cross-channel appeal of Art Nouveau silverwork at the turn of the 20th century. For any collector interested, I can provide an image of a documented Charles Murat vesta case with a lily-of-the-valley motif, very similar to this example, which I previously sold. This parallel design supports the attribution to Murat’s Paris workshop Details • Sterling silver (.925), imported to Birmingham, 1905 • Maker/importer’s mark: T·B (Thomas Bishton, sponsor for imported silver) • Style: Art Nouveau, with attribution to Charles Murat • Dimensions and weight: 72 grams
