About the Item

A museum quality antique vesta case by the Great Carlo Giuliano. The case is executed in 18k gold, with rock crystal panels and beautiful enamel work throughout - with the typical style and attention to detail we can expect from a Giuliano piece of this era. On the very top (and very bottom) is his trademark black and white floral design, radiating from it are dotted sky-blue bursts. Beneath these we see a repeating "S" design, again in black and white enamel, with further stylised "S" shapes continuting around the rock crystal panels. The rough section for striking the matches is located down the side beneath the hinge. Carlo Giuliano moved from Naples to London to establish a branch of the Casa Castellani, at 13 Frith Street in Soho. By 1875 he had opened his own jewellery shop, located at 115 Piccadilly, having already worked for some of London's finest jewellers. He became known for his Renaissance Revival designs, and fine enamel work in the 17th Century French style. As his reputation grew, Giuliano attracted a host of Royal clientele from all over Europe. This is an important piece, most probably a one-off commission by a wealthy patron - which would explain the S theme around the top and bottom. It remains in remarkable condition, all original with only very light wear to the enamel and no sign of previous repair. It is clearly signed with the CG maker's mark in two places: once inside the lid, and again on the inner base.
