Queen Victoria's Historic Mother of Pearl Inlaid Ebonised Papier Mâché Cabinet

About the Item

A Rare and Historic Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Ebonised Papier Mâché Cabinet Used by Queen Victoria in 1849. Within the annals of antiquity, a magnificent piece of historical significance— an exceptional 19th-century Mother of Pearl inlaid ebonised Papier Mâché Cabinet, bearing the distinction of having been used by Queen Victoria. Circa 1849, this remarkable cabinet is a testament to exquisite artistry and regal heritage. Superb Craftsmanship: The exterior of the cabinet boasts intricate inlaid mother-of-pearl motifs complemented by lavish gilt detailing. The lid showcases a captivating floral scene adorned with mother of pearl. Versatile Interior Design: Opening the lid reveals a partially silk-lined interior, thoughtfully compartmentalized to cater to a lady's daily needs. The arrangement includes drawers with lined compartments, each graced with a carved mother-of-pearl handle—a touch of opulence and refinement. Authenticity and Condition: Accompanying the cabinet is a hand-written note inscribed with the significant detail that it was used by Queen Victoria in 1849. While the cabinet exhibits wear commensurate with age, such as rubbing to its gilding, it remains in remarkably good condition overall, with a well-preserved interior. The interior itself unveils a world of convenience and elegance. Originally designed as a lady's compendium, it catered to the daily activities of a woman of means, and in this case, Queen Victoria. Upon lifting the lid—a glossy lacquered finish that retains its pristine allure, adorned with a radiant gilded decoration. At the top of the cabinet lies a fitted sewing box, complete with its original silk lining. Alongside it, a Victorian sewing kit, nestled in its own compartment. This Gilt Metal Sewing Etui is a testament to the attention to detail of the era, containing essential tools including a needle case, scissors, thimble, needle, and awl—all housed in a tooled leather case, measuring 14.5 x 8.5 x 2 cm. Such a comprehensive sewing kit befits the period and emphasizes the cabinet's practicality. Historical Importance of Papier-Mache: During the early 19th century, Papier Mâché held a prominent place in households as a versatile and decorative material. Originating from China and later developed in France and England, this medium found extensive use in crafting various objects of beauty and utility. Queen Victoria and Her Reign: Queen Victoria's reign spanned an impressive 63 years and 216 days, making her the longest-reigning British monarch in history. As the epitome of the Victorian era, she oversaw an expansive empire, including territories such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and India. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Provenance: From a private collector. ------------------------------

  • Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier
    Located in London, GB
Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing-Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier Inlaid with Gold, Mother-of-Pearl and Enamel 為珍珠、珍珠母和琺瑯鑲嵌的歌鳥盒 For nearly two centuries, miniature singing bird boxes have captivated collectors around the world. With masterpieces being produced by French, German, and Swiss artisans, these delicate and intricately ornate boxes combine the simple eloquence of technological machinery with fantastic artistry. This particular offering is directly inspired by famed Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, produced in a rich and vibrant tortoiseshell fascia. The ornate flower petals and nature motif is offset by the vibrant colors and underlying miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. These were highly sought-after pieces of art by nobles and royalty alike as the utility of automata was still in vogue during the 19th century. Charles Bruguier only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. Although we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork...

Early 19th Century Grand Tour Souvenirs Palais Royale French Empire Ebonized Fragrance Necessaire with Gold Gilt Bottles & A Sèvres Panel This is truly an important and stunning piece of Objet d'art. This Sèvres style porcelain necessaire/fragrance box dates back to the early 1800s Palais Royale French Empire of Napolean Bonapart I. This would most certainly adorn the highest nobility and aristocrats. In the mid-1800s, the best souvenirs from Paris were found in the boutiques of the famed Palais Royale of Paris, the old palace of Cardinal Richelieu. The boutiques lined the promenade of the central gardens, and the area was host to Royals, dignitaries, and the posh societies of the time. The treasures from the Palais Royale remain today some of the most sought-after antiques to be found. The production of perfumery articles became an industry in the nineteenth century when a new champion emerged, Napoleon Bonaparte, who had a standing order with his perfumer for 50 bottles of cologne a month. In the 18th Century, porcelain was one of the most highly prized commodities in the world. In the 19th Century, the Sèvres factory was well-known for its brilliant bleu céleste ground colour. Sèvres gilding is often finely worked or ‘tooled’ with subtle patterns and has a light touch that is very distinctive. This is a superb example of the 1800s; a gorgeous Palais Royale Sèvres porcelain ebonized wood fragrance box/necessaire, finely crafted with two original blue Opaline scent bottles...
