Rare Antique George IV Lady’s Sewing Necessaire with Original Case, est. 1825

About the Item

Rare Antique George IV Lady’s Solid Silver Sewing Necessaire with Original Case, est. 1825 A truly rare piece of life in the early 1800s blind-rolled in the classical taste with Morocco bindings and silver-hafted instruments, including a push-button mechanism. If you have ever wanted to experience the blending of modern steampunk fantasy with an authentic glimpse of life during the rule of George IV, this is it. The rounded rectangular black Morocco case is blind-rolled in the Classical taste, hinged with a cover enclosed in delicate velvet. This cushions the rare silver-hafted 5-piece instrument set. What makes this piece more unique than others is the initials of GR, the maker and the crown circa 1825 on either side of the steel scissor blades. During the rule of George IV (1820-1830), an explosion of artwork, architecture, and extravagance visited Buckingham Palace. Like most trends, the royal family set the tone for ornamentation, which is evidenced in this fantastic collection. The entire original case is 11.5cm wide. It includes a silver miniature pin cushion, silver awl, silver thimble, silver bodkin, and silver scissors with their original sheath. All items in the sewing kit are heavily ornamented with floral, royal, and British embellishments. The push-button release is still in working order. ------------------------------ Condition Report: Good condition with some wear around the edges of the interior box casement and other signs of ageing on the implements commensurate with the time. Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing-Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier Inlaid with Gold, Mother-of-Pearl and Enamel 為珍珠、珍珠母和琺瑯鑲嵌的歌鳥盒 For nearly two centuries, miniature singing bird boxes have captivated collectors around the world. With masterpieces being produced by French, German, and Swiss artisans, these delicate and intricately ornate boxes combine the simple eloquence of technological machinery with fantastic artistry. This particular offering is directly inspired by famed Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, produced in a rich and vibrant tortoiseshell fascia. The ornate flower petals and nature motif is offset by the vibrant colors and underlying miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. These were highly sought-after pieces of art by nobles and royalty alike as the utility of automata was still in vogue during the 19th century. Charles Bruguier only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. Although we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork...

  • Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial
    Located in London, GB
Rare Antique Pocket Key Watch French 1800s with Painted Enamel Dial in Working Order An exceptional example of French craftwork estimated from the mid-1800s with delicate enamel painting on the dial and bespoke Roman numerals. Pocket watches have long been a token of style and refinement, even in today’s modern era. During the mid-1800s, this would have been a status symbol as manufacturing had increased so that it was more widely available. Everyone from businessmen to international travelers would have relied on a precise pocket watch to measure the train schedules, daily paper, and end of the work day. In this case, the unique painted enamel on the dial and custom Roman numerals would mean a man of means owned this watch. Instead of relying on a more standard manufactured piece, this would have been hand-finished, demonstrating more wealth. What makes this particular timepiece so rare is the polychrome decoration of a city on the water. When you look closely at the dial, you’ll find detailed decorations of a cartouche and flora motifs perfectly offsetting the silver casement. Both of the keys are attached to a metal chain, and the appearance of the monogrammed FB is evident on the cover metal. A French inscription on the interior reads: “Echappement a Cylindre Aiguilles Quatre Rubiz.” The keys refer to the critical winding and lock set for maintaining the watch. You can also see the makers mark numbered 9356 11509. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In worker order and high quality, considering it is an antique pocket watch. There are minor age-related marks on the silver casement and some fading that will be cleaned and polished before shipping. No damage to the enamel or hands. We service all pocket watches...
