Rare William IV c1835 Castle-Top Abbotsford House Vinaigrette by Nathaniel Mills
About the Item
Finds such as these are extremely rare (possibly unique),
as it’s a fascinating piece of the early XIX century history of England
Crafted during the reign of King William IV in 1835,
by Nathaniel Mills – a Fabergé of snuff boxes – in Birmingham,
the vinaigrette is nearly 200 years old,
yet it’s in remarkably great condition
Nathaniel Mills & Sons were renowned the XIXc silversmiths,
who excelled in the making of silver boxes, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes &
visiting card cases.
Performed in silver gilt with exceptional attention to details:
it showcases skilled craftsmanship,
depicting finely detailed unusual view
(from the far side of the River Tweed) of Abbotsford House –
a residence (manor house) of Sir Walter Scott –
a prominent Scottish novelist, playwright, poet and historian.
Many of his works remain classics of English literature.
In 1811, Sir Walter Scott bought the farmland,
where he would eventually build Abbotsford.
With architect William Atkinson,
he demolished the old farmhouse in 1822 & began constructing a new home.
Scott was able to move into part of the house by 1824.
The view shown on this Vinaigrette is a view Scott was particularly fond of.
The interior features distinct English hallmarks
(anchor for Birmingham & letter date) & maker’s mark “N.M.”
It displays exceptional gilding and a grille pierced and engraved
with splendid pluming scrolls and flower heads.
This piece is in excellent condition with all the detail being very crisp.
Lidded hinged boxes that were used to mask odours and for inhaling their vapours,
vinaigrette became popular in the 1780s &
were traditionally carried in a pocket or
suspended from a chatelaine at the waist.
This prime example features a deep gilt finish,
as well as the most desirable "castle-top" design.
It is broad rectangular in form with engine turned sides &
a gorgeous floral chased outer border;
the base is engraved with engine turning
around an engraved with name Mary rectangular cartouche.
Total item’s weight: 41.8gr.
Dimensions are unusually large:
Length - 1.75 inches, 4.38cm.,
Width: 1.1 inches, 2.75cm.,
Height: 0.4 inches, 1cm.
The history, craftsmanship & impeccable provenance
make this piece a very important potential purchase.
It’s ready to become a family’s heirloom &
for its next 200 years (at least) of its fascinating life!
