About the Item

This antique 19th-century pair of bronze and red marble candlesticks with a figure of a crane standing on the back of a turtle is dated circa 1890 during the Japonisme movement and inspired by Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. The majestic and beautiful crane is standing on one leg of the turtle with the other one holding a snake. An extraordinary and original piece with a lot of symbolism. The figure represents 'longevity and conjugal happiness'. The crane (Tsuru) is said to live 1000 years, while the turtle (Kame) is considered to have a lifespan of 10,000 years. The crane chooses its partner for life; the turtle is capable of a great friendship. The crane represents good fortune and longevity. The candlesticks are also decorated with ivy and stand on the octagonal red marble columns. Dimensions: approx height 32 cm from the bottom to the top of the crane's head, approx 19cm Condition: Wear and discolouration due to the bronze, possible repair to one of the crane's leg. Otherwise good antique condition
