A rare and distinguished example of 19th-century Russian craftsmanship, this antique silver match box combines utilitarian design with refined artistry. Crafted in a cylindrical form, the hinged lid opens to reveal a richly gilded interior, preserving the luster of its era while offering a striking contrast to the dark niello exterior.
The surface is adorned with a polka dot niello pattern, a traditional Russian enameling technique in which a black mixture of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur is inlaid into engraved silver. This elegant dotted motif showcases both restraint and visual interest, echoing aristocratic taste from the Imperial Russian period.
The interior bears the 84 silver standard hallmark, indicating a silver purity of 87.5%, alongside authentic maker’s marks, attesting to its Russian origin and craftsmanship.
