A rare and finely executed Egyptian Revival desk seal in silver, richly decorated with cloisonné enamel, dating to the Art Deco period, circa 1920s–1930s. This elegant object, known in Dutch as a lakstempel, beautifully captures the fascination with ancient Egypt that swept Europe following Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.
The seal is crafted in the form of a stylized lotus column, an emblematic Egyptian motif associated with rebirth and eternal life. The flaring top is decorated with lotus petals and ankhs in deep cobalt blue, symbols of life and immortality, while the shaft is encircled by geometric borders and figures in profile, executed in shades of green, blue, and black. These vibrant polychrome enamels, worked in cloisonné technique, contrast elegantly with the silver ground, creating a striking piece that is both ornamental and symbolic.
The base of the seal is engraved with a finely detailed heraldic crest featuring a stag with antlers above a coronet, suggesting that this piece was a bespoke commission for a noble or distinguished family. Measuring 51 mm in height, the seal would have been used for sealing wax on correspondence, at once practical, decorative, and a personal mark of identity.
