Brutalist Jade Statue Midcentury Figural Attrib. Mary Polon

About the Item

This powerful, absolutely stunning Midcentury nephrite jade statue has been attributed to the artist Mary Polon, known mostly for her paintings. The texture of the (untreated, 100% natural) nephrite jade is nearly identical to statues carved thousands of years ago, though the form is distinctly more modern. But this tells us that Polon used more traditional -less modern- carving and polishing methods to achieve this gorgeous finish. Tool marks, deep scrapes, cut marks -all evidence of the more primitive tools used in the creation of this statue suggest that Polon was experimenting with this new (for her) material. The jade statue measures 9" and 11" atop its original base. The jade is 16" at its widest. The base measures 8" x 6" and is a varnished hardwood. On the rear of the piece you can see original stickers indicating the artist and date (1970). The jade is attached to the base with two thick screws that remain unseen unless looked for. There is certainly glue or resin inside the two holes drilled on the bottom to accept the screws; nonetheless, we would not lift the statue by the stone, but rather mindfully by the base and stone together. A rare, organic, gloriously brutalist piece. No cracks, chips or repairs. Simply spectacular.

A very fine carved Nephrite Jade hippopotamus figurine. Likely the work of the German lapidary carvers in Idar Oberstein (or possibly Russian in origin). The feet of the hippo have numbered inscription or signature. Simply a great carving! Date: 20th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. There are a few round concussion marks here and there, loss to one ear, a small fracture in one nostril (likely from the carving), some edge wear, and some very fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age Maker: Possibly from Idar Oberstein (or one of the Russian houses...
