About the Item

A nephrite jade hilt carved with from a single rock piece, the appeal of this elegant design lies mainly in the perfect proportions of its hilt, and the exceptional putty of the jade it is carved from. It is a superb example of the refined taste of Indian patrons who value objects as much for their form and material as for their lavish style of adornment. The slight curvature of the hilt and gently flaring grip with its subtly gabled back edge, and especially the finely carved quill ion block, bear witness to the skill and discernment of the master craftsmen producing this dagger. On the bottom of the hilt their lies a small hole which is used to fix the blade in this pistol grip. The similar colour hilts can be seen in Keene and Kaoukji 2001, cat.9.3I ; Michell 2007 cat.57, and a similar colour hilt was auctioned in Sotheby's London, 8 May 1997.
