Antique Hand Painted Portrait Miniature in Decorative Frame

About the Item

I believe this finely painted watercolor miniature portrait to date approximately to 1910, but it could also be a little earlier, or perhaps a bit later. Set in a fancy frame with green paste "gems", the portrait miniature features an elegant blue-eyed woman wearing pearl drops in her ears and a pearl strand around her neck. Her lovely gown is in shades of blue and burgundy, with lace edging. Executed in watercolor on some kind of wafer material, the painting is beautifully done and retains a signature to one side. Fine detail work, beautiful colors, and the Lady's serene expression is what drew me to this piece. I also really love the delicate styling of the frame. (my notes say it tested as gilded silver, close to sterling standard, but I want to re-test it with fresh acids and will update the listing; for the moment I will describe it as gilt metal, as it retains some old gilding). The sight area of the portrait measures approximately 3.25 x 2.5 inches; including the frame she measures approximately 3.75 x just over 3 inches, with chain and a suspension ring that gives a total drop length of approximately 4.75 inches. Both sides of the frame are fitted with nicely curved glass, and the reverse has a green and gold fabric as backing. (I have not removed the piece from the frame) Blues and greens figure prominently in this portrait, and the detail is fascinating to examine under magnification. Having studied painting in art school myself, I really am impressed with the quality of the piece. I can also see the artist scratched into the backing to create even more depth to the texture and perhaps also to make painting on the smooth surface a little easier. To the right, above the woman's shoulder is a signature that looks to be "R. Acco" or maybe "R. Arco." I've been told that from approximately 1900 to the 1920's there was a resurgent interest in portrait miniatures, with many painters creating lovely miniatures in earlier styles with signatures that were created to go with the style of the portrait. So, I don't know if the signature is the name of the actual painter, or not. I can say that the person who painted this piece was quite skilled. Remaining in very good condition, with bright coloration, I see one area at the bottom left of the portrait that may be damage or may just be some discoloration on the inside of the glass. The glass itself shows only a little light wear, mostly on the back. One of the small faceted green glass pastes that decorate the frame is missing - all the others look to be original and compliment the coloring of the piece very nicely. The fabric backing looks to also be in very good condition, with light discoloration around the edge - again, this might be on the inside of the glass - I can't be sure as I didn't want to take the piece apart. The frame itself has old patina, along with some discoloration and a bit of verdigris. A charming miniature ready to be hung and enjoyed in a new home.
