About the Item

From the personal collection of style icon Iris Apfel we have her Set of Six Hand Painted Danish Teacups and Dessert Plates with images of Wildflowers in the style of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica. Each cup and plate is hand painted with various flowers within a gilt rim, the underside with Latin identifying name and maker's marks. The set is comprised of six teacups and six pierced dessert plates. The exquisite plates and teacups were obtained directly from the estate of Iris Apfel. They are absolutely gorgeous. They are made in Denmark and in the style of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica. The plates are 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter. The cups are 3 1/4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches across at the top. IRIS APFEL For nearly half a century, Iris Apfel was beloved for her bold aesthetic, known for seamlessly combining colors, textures and patterns in new ways, redefining traditional notions of fashion and design. She was undeniably a trendsetter, instantly recognizable by her oversized oval glasses, silver hair and arms adorned with chunky bangles. Her originality was unmatched, with a distinctive style characterized by an eclectic mix of high and low fashion, harmoniously blending couture with flea market discoveries. The collection of Mrs Apfel showcases the brilliant and bold personal style of a New York City icon. Iris Apfel captivated the world with her brilliant and bold style over a thrilling eight-decade career. An interior designer, textile entrepreneur, businessperson and fashion icon who became a model at age 97, Apfel embraced daring individuality and helped rewrite the rules of style. Dubbed ‘the matriarch of maximalism’ by the BBC, she was known for her embrace of bold patterns, copious accessories and fearless colour choices. ‘When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else,’ she told the New York Times in 2011. Fashion, for Apfel, was the ultimate form of self-expression, an unmatched way to tell your own story. Long a fixture of the fashion world, Apfel became a household name in 2005 with Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection, an exhibition of her wardrobe at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The show marked the first exhibition where the Costume Institute had featured a living person who was not a fashion designer. After Rara Avis (meaning ‘rare bird’), Apfel’s star continued to rise as she collaborated with brands from MAC Cosmetics to Swarovski and H&M. In 2014, when Apfel was 93, she was the focus of Albert Maysles’ documentary Iris. In 2018, she modelled for Vogue, and Mattel released a Barbie in her name. In 2019, she signed as a model to IMG at 97. Her Instagram account boasts more than three million followers. Don’t listen to the experts,’ she once mused. ‘Listen to yourself. Listen to what you love. You will not make a mistake.’ The clothes she wore and the objects with which she surrounded herself affirm this sentiment. We also have jewels from the estates of Iris Apfel, Olivia Newton-John, Opera Legend Jessye Norman, Broadway and Hollywood Legend Chita Rivera, Mexican American singer Vikki Carr, Hollywood Legend Lauren Bacall, Hollywood Writers Jackie Collins and Barbara Taylor Bradford, Hollywood Legend Ginger Rogers, and actress Sylvia Miles - Academy Award nominee for Midnight Cowboy, Actress Celeste Holm, Senator Diane Feinstein, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's Pins, and jewels worn by the legendary performer Carol Channing - please ask us!
