About the Item

An antique yellow gold and mother of pearl button hook, in 9 karat rose gold. The button hook is elegantly crafted in rose gold and mother of pearl, the warmth of both, complementing one another. The hook and bale are crafted in rose gold, while the handle is crafted in lustrous mother of pearl. This piece would have originally been worn as part of a chatelaine (a decorative belt suspending a series of chains, holding practical items). Chatelaines were originally worn by the lady of the house and would have enabled her to carry items easily and stylishly such as note paper, pen, pencil, scissors, needles etc around the house. Most often seen in silver, chatelaines in gold were reserved for the very well off. The piece is in good condition, with signs of wear to the handle around the edges, most notably where the handle joins the hook. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. Button hook weight: 3.6g Button hook length: 60mm Button hook width (at widest): 10mm Hallmarks: none, tests as 9 karat gold, circa 1880
