Antique Russian Easter Egg A.Bragin 88 Silver & Champlevé Enamel / 104gr

About the Item

A Russian Silver & champlevé Enamel Easter egg with gilt interior, workmaster’s marks of Андрей Брагин / Andrei Bragin ( active 1852 - 1908 ) , "88" Imperial standard, St. Petersburg, ca. 1890s. The two-part egg conceals gilded feet enameled with conforming ornament that can be used to form a pair of cups. The exterior is engraved and enameled in Cobalt Blue, Turquoise blue, White and Dark Red. The design imitates peasant embroidery, depicting traditional Russian folk's Christian symbols. Egg Ø 42 mm, height : 8.2 cm on a leg, 5.8 cm without leg. Weight: 104 grams. Fine used condition, minor loss of Enamels, one small dent on one cup. Easy to open and to convert to cups. Andrei Bragin / Андрей Брагин was one of the most respected silversmiths in Saint-Petersburg in the end of 19th century. He worked since 1852 and opened his workshop in 1888 and had 25 workers in 1897 with annual turnover amounted to 7060 rubles. Although the Bragin's workshop was relatively small, its silver pieces were highly valued for their excellent quality and fine design. Bragin's workshop closely cooperated with K.Faberge that often commissioned items made at A. Bragin's workshop. The firm produced a wide range of various silver objects, objects of vertu and samovars. Influenced by the fashion and tastes of that time, the majority of Bragin's works were made in the Modern style forms and were richly decorated with Christian, Pan-Slavic, floral and natural motifs. He especially became famous for the exquisite items with champlevè enamels finely inlaid on a silver engraved plaque and that technique is well demonstrated on this 88 Egg. Bragin's firm regularly participated in All-Russian and International Exhibitions in Brussels and Saint-Petersburg in 1897 and 1903. > Most of the items that we sell are not new at all if not stated otherwise. Your personal perception of colors and physiological conditions of your eyes may also affect the vision of the items. Gemstones may often look differently in different light and weather conditions and time of the day, both indoors and outdoors. Stones of the rings photographed alone may look a bit differently when on hand because your finger makes the back side of the stone closed and light no longer can go through and the color becomes different. Stones with closed backs may seem darker than stones with open backs. Such nuances of color perception do not give any excuse to claim item to be not as described. Some buyers tried to make return of the items and to avoid paying shipping and restock expenses claimed that : " color is different from that on image .. " there are inclusions that I didn't notice " "it looks smaller than I expected" ! Unfortunately Internet sales do not allow us to see the items in person before we get them by post. Minor color deviations may be possible. So If you want to be be absolutely sure about the colors or other qualities of the items that you want to buy - please buy at physical shops and avoid internet shops. Do not buy here. CUSTOM WORK : About Resizing: Resizing of rings can be done on request. The work will be done by experienced professional jeweler. Note: We will not be responsible for any physical/color changes that may occur as a result of heating of the stones during the process of resizing. We will not be responsible if in the process of resizing or customization any stone on the ring becomes loose, if any deformation occurs in general or if band of the ring changes shape or becomes deformed. Such misfortunes may occur very seldom, but cannot be ruled out when dealing with old jewelry for any sizing requires heating and change of the band's shape. Polishing of the band is always a final step of any resizing but machinery used for polishing causes vibration that old rings (with prongs for example ) often do not like at all. WEIGHT OF THE STONES The cuts of the stones that you may see on many of the older jewelry items are usually of older mine or European and because of their deeper culets, off-round shapes and higher tables their weight is difficult to determine using the formulas for diamonds with a contemporary cut, therefore their approximate weight can only be estimated. It is often difficult or impossible to get an accurate characteristics of the weight , color and nature of inclusions without removing the stones from the settings to be weighed and examined and doing that may damage the piece.
