About the Item

An elegant and beautifully crafted Art Nouveau belt buckle, designed as a pair of stylized peacock feathers, dating to around 1900. The buckle is composed of two separate halves which interlock to form a symmetrical, fan-like composition. Each half is cast and worked in silvered metal, the surfaces adorned with radiating engraved lines that evoke the natural texture of a feather. Darkened accents highlight the relief work, enhancing the sculptural presence and depth of the design. At the center of each feather is a vivid blue iris made of early synthetic material, which gives the buckle a captivating lifelike quality and a dramatic visual focus. The peacock feather was a highly fashionable motif during the Art Nouveau period, admired both for its natural elegance and for its symbolic associations with beauty, immortality, and renewal. Artists and designers across Europe embraced such natural forms, transforming them into imaginative, flowing decorative elements that captured the spirit of the age. This buckle embodies the Art Nouveau fascination with organic lines and symbolic imagery, while also serving as a functional yet ornamental accessory.
