About the Item
Today, seed work is threatened as a dying art. Only five women on the island of Antigua are master seed workers. To save this art form before it vanishes forever, your purchase will aid in this preservation effort.
The masterful handicraft of wild tamarind and jumbie bead seedwork is a dying art, with only five women left in the world to create it. Botanique Studios is putting Antiguan and Barbudan seedwork, a tradition whose origins have outlived and transcended its challenging past, on the global stage but with a message that is undeniably as beautiful and profound as the craft itself.
This piece presented is only a snapshot of the broad range of custom-made products produced by the hands of master artisan Antiguan and Barbudan women who specialize in seedwork—created out of the wild tamarind and jumbie bead Seeds. Only 5 master artisans are left and are training the next generation of Antiguan and Barbudan craftspersons. They will continue the legacy of creating these beautiful complex patterns of wild tamarind and jumbie bead seeds sewn together to make spider web patterns for jewelry, fashion items, and household decor.

Esther Belt, Authentic Wild Tamarind Seed Bracelet
Located in Oxford, MD
Capturing the mixture of tradition and vibrancy, the Esther Belt is a part of our “Artisan Collection,” lovingly named after one of our Master Seedwork Artisans, Esther Edwards.
This unique and handmade bracelet is created with wild tamarind seeds dyed black, uniquely and innovatively dyed with shoe dye, and perfectly placed within this signature design. This pattern is a classic creation for the master seedwork artisans and for the overall island as a typical pattern possessed by Antiguan & Barbudan locales, with a twist to be created distinctively for you.

Blood & Pride of Barbuda Bracelet, Handmade Caribbean Seed Ware
Located in Oxford, MD
The original variation of this design has been exclusively tailored for sale at The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture. This is variation #5 of our most popular bracelet design, in ode to Barbuda.
This unique 8” x .5” bracelet is inspired by the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and the Pan-African Flag. The wild tamarind seeds dyed black represent the black in both flags symbolizing Black peoples.
In contrast, the petal-floral patterns accentuated with the red of the jumbie bead seeds highlight the Blood shed for the sake of liberation and the blood that unites us all across the diaspora—perfectly closing with a wild tamarind and jumbie bead seed loop and button. It inspires all that wear this bracelet to embody its symbolism.
