Art Nouveau, 14 Karat Yellow Gold Lorgnette
Located in Brisbane City, QLD
This Art Nouveau gold lorgnette likely originates from the United States during the first 20 years of the 20th Century. Crafted from 14 karat yellow gold the lorgnette is extremely simple in its design and is virtually void of ornamentation with the exception of some fine scrollwork around the lens casing. The lenses that are currently fitted are likely original, and whilst in-tact do have some abrasions to the surface of the glass. The piece is marked internally for 14 karat gold and also has a makers mark in the form of a Maltese cross inside a circle, which is currently unidentified. In good condition the piece only has some minor dents to the gold which are commensurate with age. Once a very frequently used object, this wondrous lorgnette would be a beautiful pendant on a long chain for someone wanting a piece of gold...

René Lalique Plique-à-jour Enamel and Natural Pearl Breton Lion and Seaweed Pend
Located in New York, NY
Likely created circa 1903-1907, this plique-à-jour enamel and natural pearl pendant brooch with chain by René Lalique is set in 18K gold. The modified triangular form, composed of chased 18K gold, centers two stalks of seaweed among pale green plique-à-jour enamel seawater, symmetrically bordered by rampant lions joined at the top at the tips of their tufted tails, the reverse counter enameled, suspending a natural saltwater pear-shape pear with rose tones. A work of subtle homage to Brittany and its wild coastline, this flowing form harmoniously combines motifs evoking the marine flora and history of this noble-spirited region of France so beloved of late 19th century artists. Product Details: Item #: N-21379 Artist: René Lalique Country: France Circa: 1903-1907 Materials: 1 natural saltwater pearl (measuring approximately 9.85 x 8.62 mm); Plique-à-jour Enamel; 18K Gold Signed: LALIQUE Documentation: Accompanied by GIA report #6237144602 dated December 13, 2023, stating that the pearl is natural and of saltwater origin. Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: French artists like Monet and Gaugin discovered the "emerald coast" of Brittany, Western France, in the 1880s. They captured the independent spirit of the inhabitants, dressed immaculately in their distinctive regional attire, engaged in traditional rural and seaside pursuits such as haymaking, tending animals, fishing, and journeying in groups on foot through the countryside to attend mass. Another activity that captured the artists' imagination was the more unusual activity of the seaweed harvest. Gaugin and others captured these Breton "Goemoniers'" quiet dignity as they performed this backbreaking work, raking, drying and burning the massive stacks, variously employing horsedrawn carts or the more strenuous hand barrows...

Louis Tiffany at Tiffany & Co. Favrile Glass Scarab Brooch
Located in New York, NY
This Louis Tiffany brooch dating from circa 1909 is composed of favrile glass scarabs and gold. The oval form is bezel-set with 10 glass scarabs with iridescent blue, indigo and green tones, within a delicate wire mount highlighted by gold spherules. A rare and collectible Louis Tiffany brooch of unusual materials, this brooch represents a classic innovation of the artist in the early to middle period of his work in the medium, when he was most engaged in the creation of experimental jewelry. Product Details: Item #: BO-21184 Artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany for Tiffany & Co. Country: United States Circa: 1909 Dimensions: 1.75" length, 3" width Materials: Favrile Glass; Gold; With signed box Signed: Tiffany & Co., with scratched number, possibly A7820 Literature: Jewelry dating from the period 1909-1914 featuring iridescent glass scarabs is pictured in: Janet Zapata, The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, p. 103-105 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: With their combination of simple naturalism and powerful symbolism of resurrection, favrile glass scarabs represent an important motif and medium in Louis Tiffany's work. In his decades-long career of experimentation in creating precious artistic objects, Tiffany drew inspiration across many cultures and media, with nature as his touchstone. Tiffany had an intense interest in Egyptian art and collected a number of ancient scarabs...
